Defy: A Communicative Visual Book

Exploring Anarchism Through Design

People standing up against existing rules and severe laws in Taiwan have found a unique way to express their dissent - through small-scale boycotts using everyday objects found on the streets. These objects, such as traffic cones with tires on top, barrels, benches, and self-made "No Parking" stands, are often used to build barricades and create private boundaries in shared spaces. Inspired by these acts of Anarchism, designer Jin-Zhi Liao has created Defy, a communicative visual book that aims to provoke new perspectives.

Defy stands out with its unique design and thought-provoking content. The book features glasses as a main visual hint, coated with spot varnish to create a realistic texture. The cover and belly band showcase various typical objects used in barricades, aiming to evoke shared memories among Taiwanese readers. The use of industrial packaging paper as the printing material adds to the tactile experience.

The color scheme of the cover, with its dominant red, black, and white tones, aims to create a sense of rebellion and revolution, reminiscent of left-wing ideologies. By combining visual and tactile elements, Defy allows readers to associate with the concept of Anarchism on multiple levels.

Defy is realized using spot varnishing on the major visual designs and printed on industrial packaging paper. The choice of materials and production techniques adds to the overall aesthetic and reinforces the book's theme.

The graphic design of Defy aims to create a shared life experience related to Anarchism while also interpreting a perspective of Taiwanese folk culture. By incorporating symbolic objects into the design, the book provides a platform for readers to reconsider their relationship with social systems.

The design process for Defy took place in Tainan, Taiwan, starting and finishing in April 2021. The book was published in Taiwan on April 1st, 2021. Throughout the project, the designer faced the challenge of interpreting the abstract concept of Anarchism for Taiwanese readers. By using familiar daily objects, the book allows readers to easily associate with their own experiences and engage with the subject matter.

Defy, designed by Jin-Zhi Liao, has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category in 2022. This award acknowledges the book's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Defy is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.
